Andrew
Marshall is an essayist, poet, freelance journalist, satirist, and watercolorist. His work has appeared in literary magazines, websites, blogs, and print. He is the managing editor of backpackinglight.com and the co-founder of backpacking routes.com. You can find more of his work at www.andrewmarshallimages.com, @andrewmarshallimages on Instagram and Facebook, and on Twitter @pawn_andrew.

As a writer, Andrew is concerned with the absurdity and grace of everyday life, the sublime and messy intersection of humankind with the natural world, and the ways that grief, hardship, and loss can be entangled with humor.

As a painter, Andrew practices what he calls “natural expressionism.” He is only concerned with rendering realistic forms to a certain degree, at which point his focus becomes exaggerating and expressing the internal and external characteristics of his subjects. His paintings are highly influenced by his early background as a documentary filmmaker.

Hoodie version 1.2 changelog:
-slightly shortened sleeves by 1/2 inch
-slightly widened forearm area to allow you to roll up the sleeves
-slightly decreased wrist elastic tightness
-increased hood opening to allow you to put the hood up/down more easily

This Alpha Direct Hoodie has been sublimated, which means it was dyed using a heat press before it was sewn.  To return the fabric to it's fullest loft, please wash on COLD and hang dry before use.  This will fluff up the fiber tufts that were slightly flattened during sublimation.  Our specific dye sublimation process does not affect fabric durability or permanently deform loft in our testing.  Refer to the images for a comparison before and after wash.

Call us bandwagoners.... but Alpha Direct is an amazing material.  With far better breathability than a micro grid fleece, our Alpha Direct Hoodie keeps you toasty warm at camp, but allows for greater air flow while climbing peaks, preventing you from overheating.  At 9.8 oz for a size Medium, it's a lighter and more packable option than typical fleece pullovers.

Great for layering up in the winter, the 190 gsm Alpha Direct variant can be paired with a puffy for January trips.  Or use it as a standalone thermal layer for shoulder season use.   We've found that while both 120 and 190 gsm variants offer incredible warmth for their weight, the 190 gsm is the warmest mid-layer we've used.  90 gsm variants will be available early Spring.

Our hoodie features a form-fitting balaclava style hood, perfect for chilly mornings and sleep systems without a mummy hood.  Ditch the beanie!  The hood acts as a great gaiter when worn down around the neck.  All seams are flat-locked for added durability and to prevent seam-rubbing or chafing.  Minimalist elastic cuffs and hood opening help keep the weight of the garment low.

To help offset the effects of Microplastic Pollution, wash your Alpha Direct Hoodie and other fleece gear in a Microplastic Wash Bag.  We offer one here but Guppyfriend or Costco bags work just as well.

Unisex Sizing:

If you intend on wearing a layer underneath, choose the size that best matches your chest girth.
If you intend on wearing this next to skin, as a base layer, size down.
